Origin
The Australian Kelpie is created to herd all kinds of cattle on the farms in Australia. The farms in Australia are huge, so the dog need to have a great condition and a lot of endurance. Because of it's will to work it's a breed that doesn't get tired. This breed does everything for his owner, this doesn't only make him popular as work dog but also as family dog.
There are 2 types of Kelpies. First you have the working Kelpie and second you have the show Kelpie.
The show Kelpie was created out of the working line but is FCI approved which means these dogs have a pedigree. Show Kelpies their working skills are not the same as the type of Kelpie who grows up on the farms (aka the working kelpie). So they are a bit calmer and makes him more popular as pets. Although this type of dog is calmer they do need daily to blow off steam. You can't say when you have a Kelpie: Oh today i'm so tired from work or the weather is bad, I won't go outside... No this dog will let you know that's not done! They will find other ways to make themselves tired. I can assure you, you won't like that... There are a lot of ways to entertain your Kelpie. You can do, no scratch that, you HAVE to do dog sport. There's Flyball, Agility, Obedience, Dog Frisbee, Doggy Dance, ... It's up to you to choose the one you like the most. Apart from that you have to daily walk the dog, and not just to the end of the street. But you have to take them to the woods, to the beach, let them have fun with other dogs. A few hours a day isn't luxury for this dog, it's what they need. If you do that, you'll have a happy Kelpie.
The working Kelpie their information is kept by the Working Kelpie Council in Australia. This type of Kelpie was born and bred to run around the sheep, all day and in very hot temperatures so they have a lot of energy. They are very athletic with natural talent to herd, they can herd sheep, cattle, horses, ducks, ...
They have a character quite similar to the show Kelpie, very loving and friendly. If they have enough challenges they can even be calm in the house. But I think it's just a habit. If you train your puppy (show or working) to be calm indoor than as adult dogs they will be.
